Going back and forth between Lancaster County (the birth place of my parents and I) and the Philadelphia suburbs, left an unsettled impression. Passing the Amish farms wondered how they maintain their tight community amidst a counter-culture pressing in around them. This situation always weighed on me. “How would they be happy without electricity and no TV? Why so private? What do they think of us? What’s with the black?” I couldn’t stop looking.
“Do not, I beg you, look for anything behind phenomena.
They are themselves their own lesson.”
